Leaves are falling and Autumn is calling! Enjoy four days of fun in High Point this weekend, September 23rd-September 26th.
Thursday, September 23rd
Have some fun on your lunch break and get involved with a little healthy competition. Participating restaurants across the Triad have prepared a unique and delicious “off the menu” burger available this week only. Head over to J&S Cafeteria and try The Carolina Smokehouse Burger – a double smash burger with boar & castle sauce, tomato, lettuce, cheddar and a hand-battered onion ring served on a brioche bun. After getting off work, go for round 2 on the burgers and check out another participating restaurant! Giannos will be serving The Giannos Burger – 8oz of blended certified angus beef and pancetta, fried egg, pork belly, avocado basil cream and provolone. After filling yourself up on burgers and voting online for your favorite, celebrate John Coltrane’s birthday with High Point Museum! View the 2016 “Chasing Trane” documentary on jazz legend and High Pointer, John Coltrane. The film includes commentary from Denzel Washington, Carlos Santana, Common, Cornell West, Bill Clinton and others.
Friday, September 24th
The Japanese word Matsu, meaning to wait, describes the essence of a sustainable viticulture project that combines the care for nature with biodynamic techniques. Start your official weekend off by joining The Brewer’s Kettle at 5pm for a Matsu (Spanish) Wine Tasting. After the wine tasting, hang out with your grilled friend this Friday night and have another burger! Sweet Old Bill’s is featuring The Slob AKA The Big Messy Burger – 80/20 ground chuck burger stuffed with fontina cheese, topped with pork belly, swiss cheese, tobacco onions, lettuce and tomato with a garlic aioli, served on a brioche bun. If you take your time eating, you’ll be able to head next door to Brown Truck Brewery to enjoy live music by Turpentine Shine from 7pm-10pm. If you’re going for the fall Friday night lights theme, the High Point Rockers take on West Virginia Power with the first pitch being thrown at 7:05pm.
Saturday, September 25th
Wake up, it’s time for unity in the community! The High Point Police Department is hosting a Community Day from 10am-2pm. Enjoy outdoor games, food & ice cream, tact/K9 demos, cops & kids kickball game and music provided by DJ J. Lone. From 10am-4:30pm the High Point Museum will be hosting a mini tradeshow highlighting blacksmithing, chair caning, wood working and shoemaking with customed interpreters including special guests, Jerome Bias and Mike Fox. Learn about the Tools of the Trade and see them in use by tradesmen of the 18th and 19th century. For an amazing opportunity to capture nature at its best, head over to Kersey Valley and see one of America’s largest sunflower attractions. Book reservations at Kersey Valley Sunflower Extravaganza for a whimsical photo shoot or just stroll through the GPS-designed fields in awe of the beauty across 15 acres of sunflowers. Several different varieties of sunflowers bloom throughout the season, so your visit is sure to be a success. While you’re there, check out the Kersey Valley Maize Adventure! Tickets will allow you to not only enjoy the corn maze but also the Kersey Valley Express Train, jumping pillows, super mega ride n’ slide, pedal carts, cow train, kiddie zip lines, a rock wall, bungee trampolines, the treehouse village and a dinosaur discovery!
By now you’ve probably worked up an appetite and how un-burger-lievable, we have another burger for you to try! Wrap up the end of Burger Week and head over to Black Powder Smokehouse to try The Smoke House Burger – 100% ground Hereford brisket patty topped with smoked pork belly burnt ends, cowboy candy, aged Tillamook white cheddar, crispy fried onions and their smokehouse sauce on a house baked chalua infused brioche bun. After another filling burger, I am sure you are ready for a nap – but there is no time for that! The High Point Rockers are playing at home so that means you get out and Rock the Point! Huckleberry Shyne will be treating the crowd with some good ole’ and new fashioned Country Music! After the block party, head into the ball game to watch the High Point Rockers take on West Virginia Power in game 2 of their series starting at 7:05pm. If the art scene is more up your alley, head over to Gallery On Main – an art and design hub featuring local and international art. Starting at 6pm, join in on a conversation with Greensboro Artist, Tre Wikes, who will be sharing his interpretation of his powerful artwork. After, head over to Goofy Foot Taproom where you can listen to singer/songwriter Jamie Pruitt and Dave Moran from 7pm-9pm. If you were hoping to end your night with mind-blowing illusions combined with the hilarity of a headline comedian…you’re in luck! Mike Super from America’s Got Talent will be performing at the High Point Theatre starting at 7:30pm. Enjoy this family-friendly performance with a span of emotions from laughter, intrigue, wonder, anticipation and sentimentality that only Mike Super delivers!
Sunday, September 26th
Sunday is brunch day! Magnolia Blue serves up an amazing brunch that you can enjoy out on the patio or inside. The Waking Up Crabby Biscuit Bennie is a favorite! This split biscuit is served with lump crabcakes, sauteed spinach and poached eggs – both topped with a tomato chive relish and hollandaise sauce. I promise after tasting this biscuit bennie, there is no way you’ll be able to stay crabby! That’s not the only good thing on the menu either, the Banana Foster Waffle is a big hit too. This Belgian waffle topped with flambéed bananas with dark rum & brown sugar, toasted pecans, vanilla bean ice cream and cinnamon whipped cream, will give you all the fall flavors you’ve been craving! After a delicious breakfast, get your workout in with Poses and Pours Yoga at Paddled South Brewing starting at 11:30am. Then take part in their Champagne Sunday with $6 mimosas. To wrap up the weekend before those ‘Sunday Scaries’ kick in, enjoy your Sunday night at the ball field watching the High Point Rockers take on West Virginia Power in game 3 of their series. The game will start at 5:05pm and is sure to keep your mind distracted from the busy week ahead.
